Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has drawn up a five-man shortlist ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports.Mourinho was left severely disappointed by the transfer business completed by United throughout the summer, and it appears there will be real investment at Old Trafford next month.4

Improving the Red Devils’ defence looks to be the priority for Mourinho, as United have already conceded 26 goals this Premier League season, in just 16 matches.Luke Shaw, the left-back, is the only one of their defenders to have performed at a consistently high level since the beginning of the campaign, but that does not mean he may not be replaced. According to The Sun, Tottenham’s left-sided defender Danny Rose is wanted by Mourinho, along with his club team-mate Toby Alderweireld, Porto full-back Eder Militao, as well as midfielders Arne Maier, of Hertha Berlin, and FCSB’s Dennis Man.4

Maier and Man are 19 and 20 years old respectively so are clearly seen as talents for the future, but Militao, also 20, would be signed by United to immediately come into the first-team.The Brazil international is predominantly a right-back, though he can play in the centre of defence or in midfield as well.4

Tottenham pair Rose and Alderweireld are long-term targets of United’s, with the latter one of the centre-backs Mourinho wanted signed earlier this year.

The Belgium international’s contract expires at the end of this season unless the north London club trigger an extension on his deal, which would make him available for just 25.4million in the final 14 days of next summer’s transfer window.4

Alderweireld’s future with Tottenham is still in doubt

Spurs may cash in on Alderweireld before extending his contract, however, with a 40million January move to Old Trafford mooted.
