This may jog the memories of one or two older readers but for those of you who weren’t around at that time, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup was set up to promote international trade fairs through football.It was founded in 1955 and abolished in 1971 and in the final year of the competition, Liverpool came up against Bayern in the fourth round. But ten years later, Liverpool put an old wrong right after securing a victory on away goals in their European Cup semi-final against Bayern.Both sides drew 0-0 in the first leg at Anfield but Ray Kennedy’s 81st-minute strike gave the Reds the lead at Munich’s Olympiastadion.Karl-Heinz Rummenigge’s late goal gave Liverpool a few anxious moments but they held out and went on to win the competition after beating Real Madrid in the final.
